Technical Differences Between Linter Versions

Linter SQL Server Differences Between Versions

New Features of Linter 6.1

  • multi-version record storage supporting ANSI levels of transaction isolation;
  • full support of hierarchic transactions;
  • Intersect/except SQL construction enhancing the possibliities of working with data by intersecting and excepting data in queries;
  • optimization of network protocol support;
  • maximum size of the data stored in the system significantly increased. Record size in a table increased to 64KB (not counting BLOB data).

Linter 6.1 supports many more operating systems, including those for Pocket PC/PDA. Thus, Linter is now available for embedded OS: QNX 6, ÎÑ 2000, Windows CE, Embedded Linux (Zaurus).

When developing the new system version, particular attention was paid to user interfaces, especially for UNIX. New graphic utilities for UNIX and Win32 have been implemented in Linter 6.1: LHB, LinDesk, MIGRATION.

Of great importance is the ability to work with information in multiple national encodings. The system supports code pages with a UNICODE kernel, while the ODBC driver allows interacting with any programs supporting this particular interface.

The protection of data from unauthorized access in Linter 6.1 has been enhanced:

  • stored procedure protection optimized;
  • EXTFILE data security support implemented;
  • the capabilities of the backup copying function now include In-kernel Backup;
  • data transferred via the network is now protected using SSL protocols.

Besides the changes described above, Linter 6.1 has higher performance, additional optimization of database queries, and higher speed of index search and integer modification (due to the possibility to store such data unpacked) .

Naturally, many parameters of Linter 6.1 significantly differ from those of the previous versions (5.x). These differences concern such an important area as data compatibility.

To facilitate the transition from one Linter version to another, the new MIGRATION utility has been included in Linter 6.1 . This utility converts databases created in previous versions of the system.

New capabilities of Linter 6.0 (compared to Linter 5.9).

  1. The kernel supports one-byte code pages and UNICODE, including sorting and transformation.
  2. The maximum table size has been increased to 500 million records.
  3. Stored procedure security support.
  4. EXTFILE data support.
  5. In some cases, integer numbers in an index will be stored unpacked . This allows increasing the index search performance and modification, as well as reducing the index size.
  6. SQL Intersect/except constructions have been implemented.
  7. The limit imposed on the number of query responses allows returning only the predefined number of responses to a query.

New features of Linter 5.9 (compared to Linter 5.8)

  1. Further optimization of SQL queries . When the Linter kernel performs JOIN operations (both direct and indirect) with several predicates, joint indexes are used.
  2. One-column indexes can be named.
  3. If JOIN operations are performed with expressions that have no indexes, temporary indexes will be created automatically.
  4. Query profiling mode is used for detecting missing indexes (which are created automatically further on).
  5. JDBC driver redesigned.
  6. Full support of ANSI escape sequences at the JDBC/ODBC driver level.
  7. The network server driver's performance in UNIX has been increased.
  8. The converter supports ErWIN 3.5 ERX schemes.
  9. The number of columns in an aggregative index has been increased to 31.
  10. The size of all database identifiers has been increased to 66 characters.
  11. The structure of ODBC directories has been modified to comply with the ODBC 3.5 standard.
  12. New features have been added to the GROUP BY syntax.
  13. Tables and columns can be renamed for VIEW.
  14. New functions added:

ASIN,
ACOS,
ATAN,
ATAN2,
MOD,
DBNAME - returns the database name as CHAR (18),
DAYNAME,
MONTHNAME - return the English day and month names (respectively) as CHAR (3),
OCTET_LENGTH - returns the string length in bytes,
RIGHT_SUBSTR - returns the last n characters in a string,
REPEAT_STRING - repeats the string n times.
